To get full ground cover, it's recommended to plant with 10 or 20 cm space between plants. At such spacing, they should fill out and cover the gaps within one year - if watered regularly and fertilised every few months.

To control broad leaved weeds amongst the zoysia grass within the initial period of planting (before they provide full coverage), broad leafed selective herbicides can be used. Any product containing Dicamba works well. The selective herbicide will kill any broadleaf weeds, leaving the Zoysia nice and healthy.

Of course, diligent hand weeding will also work. After the grass fills in the gaps and provides full coverage, weeds are usually not a problem.
