Wodyetia bifurcata (Foxtail Palm)
A hardy, slender, tall and compact growing Australian native Palm perfect for lining driveways, fence lines and for creating a small but striking top canopy in tropical gardens. The foxtail palm is self-cleaning, with bright, feathery foliage.
Meaning of name: bifurcata is Latin for “twice divided,” in reference to the shape of both the fruit and the fish-tailed leaflets.
Typical height: Up to 10m
Climate: Prefers tropical or subtropical climates, or warm protected areas in Temperate climates
Light conditions: Full sun to part shade
Growth habit: Solitary
Growing conditions: Moist well drained soil.
Origin: Cape York, Australia
It grows on exposed hill tops in sandy, granitic soils among enormous granite boulders on Cape Melville on Cape York, north Queensland.
Fast becoming one of the most popular landscaping palms in the tropics and sub-tropics. It is an extremely hardy palm, being able to take full sun from a very early age - drought tolerant, wind tolerant and frost tolerant.
