This plant really does need quite shady conditions with little direct sun. Keep moist in well drained soil. 

Since this plant originates in the warm rainforests of Brazil, they are best grown outside only in warm and humid locations. Coastal conditions in QLD and northern NSW is generally ok, but not southern parts of Australia or inland areas (unless grown indoors). They prefer filtered light and moist well drained soil enriched with plenty of organic matter. Dry air and cool temperatures can cause damage to the leaves.

As indoor pot plants in cool climates, these tropicals grow best in humidified rooms or bathrooms, as long as there is bright natural light (but not direct sun).  Allow their soil to dry slightly on the surface before watering again.
