Colocasia gigantea (Thai Giant)
One of the largest and most spectacular of the elephant's ears which can grow up to 3m tall with leaves over a meter long. Its pale green to bluish-green foliage and thick, succulent stems add a bold statement to gardens or landscapes.
Thai Giant grows natively in semi-tropical, monsoon forests in Southeast Asia where it receives heavy frequent rains in well-drained soil. Although other species of Colocasia can tolerate wet feet, Colocasia gigantea cannot. A well-draining, compost rich soil is essential. In heavy soils, a raised bed may be necessary to allow excess water to drain away.
Once the Thai Giant becomes established, it wants heavy frequent watering and feeding. Mulch well. More water = more plant.
The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals. These cause an extremely unpleasant sensation similar to needles being stuck into the mouth and tongue if they are eaten, but they are easily neutralized by thoroughly drying or cooking the plant or by steeping it in water.
