Bauhinia variegata (Orchid Tree)
A showy fast-growing, short trunk tree often planted as an ornamental in many tropical and subtropical regions. Fragrant orchid like flowers of intense pinks, purples and whites on spreading branches makes a spectacular feature.

Synonyms (AKA): Mountain Ebony
Typical height: 5 to 8m
Minimum temperature tolerance: Tolerates light frosts once mature
Climate: Grows well in most parts of Australia
Light conditions: Full sun
Growing conditions: Well drained soil
Flowers: Spring/Summer

In tropical climates it is semi-evergreen, in cooler climates it is deciduous flowering on leafless branches. Quite drought-tolerant once fully established, but they do appreciate an occasional deep soak. Pruning is best after flowering to keep it neat.
