Also known as the wild areca palm or clumping betel nut. Native to tropical parts of India and south-east Asia where the fronds are used for thatching and the stems used for posts. Highly ornamental arching wide leaves and self cleaning palm. Produces very unusual young green stems, similar in appearance to bamboo. Likes a good drink of water and prefers a sheltered spot from cold dry winds.
Flowers almost all year round. Male and female flowers on the same plant. Seed is a reddish coloured berry. Will grow to five metres in the garden, but typically smaller when used as an indoor plant.
